Year End Tax Planning for Illinois Small Businesses: Moves to Make Before December 31

October is the best month nobody talks about. Tax season feels far away, but the decisions you make in the next few weeks decide how much you pay in April. Here is what we tell our Illinois small business clients to do before December 31 rolls around.

Look at Your Books While There Is Still Time to Fix Them

Most owners do not touch their books until January, and by then the year is closed. You cannot change anything after the fact. Take an hour this week and look at your profit and loss through September. If the numbers surprise you, good. That means you still have time to act. October gives you the one thing January never does. Options. Moving a purchase, timing income, making a contribution, all of that only works while the year is still open.

Buy What You Need Before the Year Ends

If your Joliet business needs new equipment, a vehicle, or computers, buying in November or December can mean deducting it on this year's return instead of waiting another year. If you have been thinking about a new work van, kitchen equipment for your restaurant, or computers for the office, the calendar matters as much as the price tag. Talk to us before you buy, because the rules on Section 179 deductions have limits and fine print. But for many small businesses, timing a purchase before year end is one of the simplest tax moves there is.

Do Not Forget Illinois Sales Tax and Payroll Obligations

Year end is when unfiled sales tax returns and missed payroll deposits come back to bite. Illinois businesses have state sales tax filings and payroll withholding rules on top of the federal ones. If you have fallen behind, catching up in December is far cheaper than dealing with penalties and interest in February. We see this every year with Will County businesses, and the fix is always cheaper in December than in March.

Make Your Retirement Contributions Count

If you have a 401k through your business, your employee contributions have to come out of your paycheck before December 31. Once the year ends, that deduction is gone for good. Even a small contribution lowers your taxable income and builds something for later. It is one of the easiest moves on this list, and it is also one of the most overlooked.

Plan Next Year's Quarterly Payments Now

If your business grew this year, your estimated tax payments for next year need to grow with it. Nobody likes a surprise tax bill. A quick look at this year's numbers tells you roughly what to set aside each quarter next year, so you are paying along the way instead of scrambling in April.

These are the conversations we have with Will County business owners every October. Simple, practical, and worth real money if you act now instead of waiting for tax season.

If you want a quick review of your own situation before the year ends, come talk to us. Free consultation. In office Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Appointments available other days. Call (773) 360-8230 or visit us at 1256 West Jefferson Street, Suite 207, Joliet, IL.
